When Oliver Cowdery wanted a further witness, the Lord did not hand him a new sign. He sent him back to one he already had. Cast your mind upon the night you cried out and received peace, the Lord said, and called that remembered experience a witness greater than any other. The science of memory shows why returning to a specific past moment can steady a present faith.

Reliving a moment brings it back with force

Memory scientist Charan Ranganath, in his 2024 book Why We Remember, describes the kind of remembering that lets us relive an experience rather than merely recall a fact. He calls on the idea of mental time travel: when you bring back a specific event, your mind reinstates its context, the place, the feelings, the sense of being there, and for a moment you stand inside it again. This is far more powerful than holding an abstract belief. A general conviction that God is real can grow thin under pressure. The vivid memory of a particular night when God was unmistakably near can be reentered, and its assurance felt afresh, because reliving an experience reaches the heart in a way a proposition never does.

A doubt usually lives in the realm of ideas, where one argument can be met by another and certainty slips away. A remembered encounter lives in the realm of experience, on firmer ground. You cannot easily argue yourself out of a moment you actually lived, especially when you go back and stand inside it again.

This is why the Lord so often answers a request for new assurance by pointing to old experience. Fresh proofs fade as fast as they arrive, met by fresh doubts the next morning. A remembered encounter, returned to on purpose, draws on something already proven in your own life, and it speaks with the authority of something you know happened because you were there.
