Introduction
Isaiah 50 through 57 is the servant song sequence.
In Isaiah 50 the Servant speaks in his own voice for the first time: “The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary” (Isaiah 50:4).
The Great King has equipped him.
He wakes every morning to the Great King’s instruction and speaks what he has heard.
Then the cost arrives: “I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting” (Isaiah 50:6).
The faithful Servant receives the covenant-breaking community’s rejection. The Great King’s servant set his face like the hardest stone, the surface that gives no ground (Isaiah 50:7).
He will not abandon the commission regardless of what it costs.
