The brain wakes for what surprises it

The brain is built to notice the unexpected. The neuroscientist Charan Ranganath, in his 2024 book Why We Remember, describes how surprise opens the gates of memory. When something startling happens, the brain releases a burst of chemistry that says pay attention, this matters, remember this. The brain spends its attention on the new and the surprising, and lets the wholly familiar slip past, because there is little reason to record what you already knew was coming. This is a feature, sharpened over a long evolutionary past. The new berry, the strange footprint, the unfamiliar face carried information worth keeping.

His lab found that the same circuitry which drives us toward rewards also fires when we meet a surprise, which is why curiosity can feel a little like hunger. A mind that expects to be surprised leans in. A mind that expects the same old thing tunes out. So familiarity itself is what dims a once-living verse. Repetition without surprise teaches the brain to skim.

A small child shows you the rule in miniature. Tell a toddler something expected and the eyes glaze over. Surprise her, and she lights up and begs to see it again. That hunger to know, sparked by the unexpected, is the same engine that fixes a moment in memory. We are built to lean toward the new, and to coast past whatever we already had filed away.
