Introduction

Every reader of the Book of Mormon has met the Davidic covenant of grant without knowing its name.

Isaiah 11:1, quoted in 2 Nephi 21:1, invokes a specific promise the Great King made to David in 2 Samuel 7: an irrevocable grant of dynasty, a son whose throne the Great King will establish forever, a covenant relationship the Great King will maintain even through the son’s failures.

When the Psalms cry out to the Great King to remember his covenant with David (Psalm 89:49), they appeal to that same grant.

All of it traces back to one night, one oracle, one oath. The Great King sent Nathan to tell David: I will be his father, and he shall be my son.

The human king is adopted by God (the Great King) as a son.

Forever after the title “Son of God” will be a title of kingship.
