Introduction
In the ancient world, a double portion was the firstborn son’s inheritance: the transfer of family headship, the greater share of responsibility and blessing.
When Elisha asks Elijah for a double portion of his spirit as they walk together before Elijah is taken up, he is asking to be the covenant heir (2 Kings 2:9).
Elijah’s answer is direct: “Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so” (2 Kings 2:10).
The condition is simple.
Keep your eyes on the Great King’s representative at the moment of commissioning.
Elisha sees.
The mantle falls.
He strikes the Jordan with it and the waters part.
The sons (i.e., student disciples) of the prophets watching from Jericho say: “The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha” (2 Kings 2:15). The same Great King who parted the Red Sea, who parted the Jordan for Joshua, parts it again.
The covenant inheritance has passed.
