In a boat on the lake, the disciples fretted about having only one loaf of bread, and Jesus answered with a string of pointed questions. Did they not remember the loaves, the thousands fed, the baskets gathered up? They had witnessed the impossible twice, and a short while later anxiety had crowded the memory out of reach. The science of memory shows how easily worry does this.

Anxiety narrows the mind away from what it knows

Cognitive neuroscientist Charan Ranganath, in his 2024 book Why We Remember, explains that stress and anxiety are hard on memory in more than one way. Worry narrows attention to the threat in front of us, so the mind stops drawing on what it knows and fixes on the fear. Under that narrowing, even vivid past experiences fail to inform the present, sealed off behind the immediate worry. A frightened mind struggles to reach its own best memories, not because they are gone, but because fear has shrunk the field of view.

There is a second failure at work, the failure to carry a lesson across. A truth learned in one setting often stays tied to that setting, and the mind keeps it there rather than carrying it to a new situation that needs it. The disciples had seen God provide bread for a crowd on a hillside. In a boat, facing a different shortage, the earlier lesson sat unused, because remembering a past rescue and applying it to a present fear are two different acts, and worry blocks the second.

You can watch this in small ways. Under sudden stress, a name you know perfectly will hide from you, returning only once the pressure passes. The knowledge was never lost. Fear had simply closed the door to it for a while, and calm reopened it.
