In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, I chose to celebrate with a creative reflection rather than a historical summary. This piece reshapes the Declaration using the covenant pattern found in Scripture, especially the account of God’s covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19-24). By doing so, it invites readers to think more deeply about where liberty comes from, what sustains it, and what happens when freedom is separated from moral responsibility. The aim is reflection, not politics; a reminder that human rights rest on enduring moral foundations and that a covenant-keeping God offers dignity and liberty to all people, regardless of nation or belief.

Preamble

When in the course of human history, it becomes necessary for the Creator to reaffirm His bond with those formed in His image, and to recall them from confusion to covenant, it is fitting that He declare again the purposes for which He established both worlds and nations.

I, the LORD, the Eternal Sovereign, Creator of heaven and earth, do now speak; to declare the grounds of My righteous rule and to invite all people to enter freely into an enduring covenant of life and liberty under My name.

Statement of Divine Principles

I hold these truths to be eternal and self-evident:

  1. That all persons are created by Me, endowed with sacred worth and agency, bearing My image.

  2. That the rights to life, liberty, conscience, and community flow from My own character, not from the decree of rulers or the vote of majorities.

  3. That government, law, and power exist to serve justice and mercy, and lose all legitimacy when they defy them.

  4. That true freedom is not the absence of restraint but the presence of righteousness—the liberty to love the good.

  5. That the health of nations depends on truth spoken, promises kept, and the humble recognition that all authority is accountable to Me.

Historical Prologue

I am the LORD your God, who brought humanity out of darkness, who led enslaved peoples to freedom, who raised up prophets, and who sent My Son to redeem the captive.
I have sustained your land with abundance, endowed you with wisdom, and permitted you to form governments so that justice might dwell among you.

Yet you have forgotten the Giver while treasuring the gifts; you have exalted autonomy above relationship and rights above righteousness.

The Covenant Proposal

Therefore I now call this generation to covenant renewal.

  1. Exclusive Allegiance: You shall recognize no ultimate authority above Me; all earthly power is delegated and temporary.

  2. Truthfulness: You shall honor facts as sacred things; falsehood and propaganda are violations of My image.

  3. Justice and Mercy: You shall guard the poor, the stranger, and the unborn; I measure nations by their compassion.

  4. Stewardship: You shall treat the earth not as a possession but as a trust.

  5. Faithfulness: Keep your oaths, contracts, and marriages; I Myself am the Faithful One.

  6. Rest and Worship: Remember that liberty without sabbath collapses into slavery of labor and greed.

  7. Civic Humility: Govern as servants, not masters; seek the common good, not the tribe’s advantage.

  8. Accountability: Courts and legislatures are not your final judges; righteousness and truth are.

  9. Community: Love your neighbor; democracy without love disintegrates into rivalry.

  10. Hope: Expect renewal; I do not abandon what I have made.

Blessings and Warnings

If you honor this covenant of dependence, I will bless your homes with peace, your institutions with integrity, and your hearts with joy.

If you reject Me, your freedom will devour itself; you will have laws without justice, wealth without contentment, and knowledge without wisdom.

Deposition and Witness

Let these words be published in every city and preserved in every heart. Let the heavens and the earth bear witness to this covenant between the Eternal Sovereign and those who would live as a people of truth.
