What Isaiah 40–49 Is Really Doing

“I form light and create darkness. I make well-being and create calamity. I am God, who does all these things.”

Isaiah 45:7 is one of the most theologically stark verses in the Old Testament. A God who creates calamity appears to contradict every theological instinct that locates the source of darkness outside the divine will.

The verse arrives inside Isaiah 40–55’s most sustained passages of divine comfort. Comfort, comfort my people. The everlasting God who does not faint, who gives power to the faint.

And embedded inside that comfort: the God of eagles’ wings also creates calamity.
