What Genesis 22 Is Really Doing

God tells Abraham to kill his son.

Abraham wakes one morning, receives a command so morally charged that three thousand years of readers have never stopped wrestling with it, and begins walking toward a mountain. The fire is in Isaac’s hand. The wood is on his back. And Isaac asks the question every reader is already thinking: “Father, where is the lamb?”

Abraham answers without lying and without explaining: “God will provide.”

He walks forward on a promise, unsure yet whether provision is coming.
