What Jeremiah’s Lonely Ministry Is Really Doing
God tells Jeremiah not to pray for the people.
Three times the command comes:
“Do not pray for this people” (Jeremiah 7:16).
“Do not lift up a cry or prayer for them” (Jeremiah 11:14).
“Do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you” (Jeremiah 14:11-12).
The prophet’s whole job is to stand between the people and God’s judgment. And God is commanding him to stop.
Then God tells Jeremiah something even harder.
“You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters” (Jeremiah 16:2).
Jeremiah has to stay unmarried as a sign.
His lonely life becomes God’s message.
What Jerusalem’s future will look like is made visible in one man’s solitary life right now.
