On the last night, Jesus promised his disciples a helper who would do something specific with their memories. The Comforter, he said, would bring to their remembrance all that he had taught them. The science of memory shows why that promise meets a real and constant need, because so much of what we know sits stored and silent until something calls it up.

Retrieval is the bottleneck of memory

Neuroscientist Charan Ranganath, in his 2024 book Why We Remember, explains that memory works by cues. A vast amount of what we have learned is held in storage, available but inactive, waiting for the right prompt to bring it to the surface. The knowledge is there; the trouble is access. We have all forgotten something we plainly knew, only to have it surface the instant a cue arrived. Retrieval, far more than storage, is the bottleneck of memory. Much of what we need is already inside us, and the deciding question is whether something will call it up at the moment it is needed.

This is why the right prompt at the right time can feel like a small revelation. The teacher who asks the question that unlocks what you already knew, the smell that returns a whole childhood, the word that brings back a forgotten resolve, each is a cue reaching into storage and lifting something into the light. We rarely retrieve our best knowledge on command. It comes when something prompts it.

This is why review and reminder matter so much in learning anything. The material does not vanish between lessons; it sinks below reach, and a prompt is what lifts it again. A good teacher spends much of their effort cueing the truths already there, as much as adding new ones.
