What Isaiah’s Apocalyptic Finale Is Really Doing
God’s vengeance arrives dressed in crimson.
Isaiah 63 opens with one of the strangest images in all the prophetic writings of the Old Testament.
A figure comes from Edom with his clothes stained red. He is walking alone, crushing grapes in a winepress. His clothing is crimson with the blood of nations. “I have crushed them in my anger,” he says. “Their blood has spattered on my clothes.” (Isaiah 63:3.)
If you have been taught that God is love, this picture is hard to look at. The same God who says “I will comfort you like a river of peace” also appears as a warrior covered in blood from battle.
