"Who is the King?" This may be one of the most important questions for understanding not just the Bible, but the entire covenant story God is telling through scripture. Much of the biblical narrative is dominated by how this question was asked and answered—and the consequences that followed. The prophet Jacob provides the most sublime answer to this question: "I, the Lord, the king of heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them forever, that hear my words" (2 Nephi 10:14). Yet the painful paradox of scripture is watching how consistently God's people replace the Real King who makes and keeps covenants unconditionally, with false and destructive kings who lead people away from loyalty to God and into apostasy or exile.
