What Isaiah 1–12 Is Really Doing
God is sick of the sacrifices.
“Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them. The incense is an abomination. When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not hear.” (Isaiah 1:14-15)
The people being addressed are performing the covenant’s prescribed worship with full institutional compliance. They are bringing the burnt offerings, observing the new moons, and keeping the appointed feasts.
The sacrificial system that Leviticus established with meticulous detail is being executed.
The religion is running.
And God finds it repugnant.
