Just after Moses beheld the glory of God face to face, Satan came to him demanding worship. Moses met the temptation with a question drawn straight from what he had just experienced. Where is your glory, he asked, that I should worship you? The science of memory shows why a vivid, recent memory of the real thing is one of the strongest defenses against a counterfeit.
Memory gives us the standard that exposes the false
Cognitive neuroscientist Charan Ranganath, in his 2024 book Why We Remember, explains that we make sense of the present by comparing it against what we already hold in memory. The mind constantly measures new experience against stored experience, and that comparison is how we recognize what fits and what does not. A vivid, well-encoded memory becomes a standard, a reference against which a present claim can be tested. When you know the genuine article well, the imitation gives itself away, because it fails to match the original you carry. The clearer and more recent the true memory, the sharper the contrast with anything false.
This is why a fresh and vivid encounter is such a powerful guard. A faint or distant memory makes a weak standard, easy for a convincing counterfeit to slip past. A bright, recent, deeply felt memory of the real thing leaves no room for the fake, which can only suffer by the comparison the mind cannot help but make.
We use this kind of comparison all the time. Someone who has handled real currency for years can spot a forgery by feel, without being able to say quite how. The genuine is so well known that the fake announces itself. Spiritual discernment often works the same way, a trained familiarity with the true that makes a counterfeit obvious on contact.
