For many readers, these chapters feel dense and unfamiliar. Measurements, materials, offerings, and regulations dominate the text. The question naturally arises: Why would God devote so much scripture to instructions that feel distant from modern life?
Dear Friends,
God’s covenant commitment is expressed in covenant nearness. These chapters explain how God chooses to remain present with a people who are learning, failing, repenting, and growing. Structure and ritual and sacred space are expressions of relationship. They make relationship possible.
What Is Happening in the Text
Exodus 35–40 describes the construction of the tabernacle. Every detail matters. Materials are gathered willingly (Exodus 35:21). Skilled labor is honored (Exodus 35:30–35). The structure is assembled exactly as instructed. In the ancient world, temples symbolized divine residence. A god’s presence defined the space. Israel’s tabernacle is mobile, signaling that God travels with His people.
When the work is completed, the glory of the LORD fills the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34–38). God’s presence is visible and guiding. Movement and rest are shaped by divine nearness.
Leviticus 1 and 4 introduce offerings that address gratitude and failure. Sacrifice in the ancient world functioned as a means of restoring relational balance. These offerings acknowledge that life with God includes joy, error, and repair. Leviticus 16 presents the Day of Atonement, a ritual of cleansing for the entire community (Leviticus 16:29–34). Holiness is treated as communal health rather than individual perfection.
Leviticus 19 shifts focus to everyday life. Ethical commands about honesty, care for the vulnerable, and love of neighbor define holiness (Leviticus 19:18). Sacred presence shapes daily behavior.
What This Reveals About God
These chapters reveal a God who chooses to dwell among imperfect people. God’s covenant love expresses itself through proximity. He does not wait for flawlessness before drawing near.
God also values order that supports relationship. The tabernacle creates a structured space where presence, forgiveness, and guidance can be experienced safely. Boundaries protect life rather than restrict access.
God’s approach to holiness integrates worship and ethics. Nearness to God transforms how people treat one another. Covenant love flows outward through justice, care, and integrity.
God’s presence remains active and responsive. He guides movement. He remains visible. He stays with His people through uncertainty.
This is His hesed.
So What Does This Mean for Us
Many disciples assume that closeness to God depends on personal perfection. Exodus and Leviticus challenge that assumption. God draws near to shape, heal, and teach rather than to withdraw. He doesn’t wait for perfection before He arrives or before He invites into His presence.
These chapters also reframe religious practice. Ritual, structure, and repetition create space for awareness, repentance, and gratitude. They help communities remain attentive to God’s presence.
For modern readers, this invites reflection on how sacred rhythms shape daily life. Covenant living involves intentional practices that keep relationship visible and accessible.
God’s desire to dwell with His people continues to shape how faith is lived and sustained.
How to Read This Week With New Eyes
As you read Exodus 35–40 and Leviticus selections,
Notice how willingly the people contribute to creating sacred space (Exodus 35:21).
Watch how God’s presence responds to the people’s devotion (Exodus 40:34–38).
Pay attention to how holiness includes ethical concern for others (Leviticus 19:9–18).
Ask one guiding question: What does this passage teach me about how God creates space to remain near His people?
